Here is a delicious baked mac and cheese recipe that’s creamy and comforting. I also included some suggestions to make it unique to your own taste.
Mac & Cheese is a staple for so many Thanksgiving meals and special occasions. It is a serious deal, so be sure you know what you are doing in the kitchen.
- Ingredients:
- 1 pound elbow macaroni
- 4 cups sharp cheddar cheese, grated
- 2 cups Gruyere cheese, grated (can substitute with more cheddar)
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 4 cups whole milk
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
- 2 tablespoons melted butter (for topping)
- Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C)
- Cook macaroni in salted water until al dente (about 2 minutes less than package directions)
- Meanwhile, make the cheese sauce:
- Melt butter in a large saucepan over medium heat
- Add flour and whisk for 1 minute to make a roux
- Gradually add milk while whisking constantly
- Cook until sauce thickens (about 5 minutes)
- Remove from heat and stir in cheeses, salt, pepper, and nutmeg
- Combine sauce with drained pasta
- Pour into a greased 9×13 baking dish
- Top with breadcrumbs mixed with melted butter
- Bake for 25-30 minutes until bubbly and golden brown
Tips:
- Let it rest 5-10 minutes before serving
- Shred your own cheese (pre-shredded has anti-caking agents)
- Don’t overcook the pasta as it will continue cooking in the oven
- For extra creaminess, I can suggest:
- Adding cream cheese or mascarpone
- Including evaporated milk
- Using different cheese combinations
- For more spice/flavor, we add:
- Cayenne pepper
- Jalapenos
- Smoked paprika
- Garlic
- Crispy bacon
- For interesting cheese combinations:
- Smoked Gouda
- Fontina
- White cheddar
- Pepper jack
- Goat cheese
